Signs with Buffalo
Tue, Aug 18, 2026, 6:29 PM
The Bills signed Gaines to a contract Tuesday.
Analysis: Gaines is a 6-foot-1, 312-pound nose tackle. The Bills' defense currently has standout second-year player Deone Walker set to fill the starting nose tackle role, but the team does not have much further depth at the position. Gaines is a strong space eater with a chance to fulfill a key depth role for the Bills in 2026 if he can prove himself throughout the preseason. The 30-year-old's first opportunity to show his stuff will be Saturday's showdown against the Browns. The Bills waived defensive lineman Tommy Akingbesote in a corresponding move.
Tyler Bass
Tyler Bass Busy in preseason opener
Tue, Aug 18, 2026, 2:45 PM
Bass went 3-for-4 on field-goal tries and made both extra-point attempts in Buffalo's preseason win over the Panthers on Saturday.
Analysis: Bass is back at full health after recovering from a pelvic injury that cost him the entire 2025 season. The Bills don't even have another kicker on the roster at this point, so Bass is the main guy for what should be a productive offense led by superstar Josh Allen and a new offensive-minded head coach in Joe Brady.
Keon Coleman
Keon Coleman Suffers sprained foot/toe in preseason
Tue, Aug 18, 2026, 12:17 PM
Coleman has been diagnosed with a sprained right foot/toe, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Coleman was a spectator at the start of Tuesday's practice, wearing a low walking boot on his right foot. The issue likely stems from Saturday's preseason game against the Panthers, when he limped off the field during the Bills' third possession. At the moment, a number of Buffalo wide receivers are tending to injuries, including DJ Moore (lower body), Coleman, rookie fourth-round pick Skyler Bell (lower body) and Tyrell Shavers (knee, active/PUP). Coleman's own health concern may impact his status for Saturday's exhibition at Cleveland.
DJ Moore
DJ Moore Limited in return to practice Tuesday
Tue, Aug 18, 2026, 9:36 AM
Moore (lower body) was a limited participant in his return to practice Tuesday, Alex Brasky of SI.com reports.
Analysis: After sustaining an apparent lower-body injury during Saturday's preseason win over the Panthers, Moore was back on the field three days later in full pads, albeit with some restrictions in place. According to Brasky, Moore was mostly limited to individual work and didn't take part in team drills. While the Bills could monitor his workload carefully over the next few days and potentially hold him out of Saturday's exhibition versus the Browns, Moore's availability for the start of the regular season doesn't appear to be in any peril.
Keon Coleman
Keon Coleman Sporting walking boot on right foot
Tue, Aug 18, 2026, 8:13 AM
Coleman was spotted with a walking boot on his right foot Tuesday after suffering an injury during Saturday's preseason win over Carolina, Katherine Fitzgerald of The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Coleman started the preseason game and caught a touchdown pass from Josh Allen on the second drive, only to then stay in with the backups and almost immediately suffer an injury. It's unclear at this point if Coleman is in serious danger of missing Week 1. He looked to be on track for the No. 3 receiver job behind DJ Moore and Khalil Shakir, but an extended absence could open the door for Joshua Palmer or fourth-round rookie Skyler Bell (lower body) to claim that job instead.
DJ Moore
DJ Moore Suited up for Tuesday's session
Tue, Aug 18, 2026, 8:10 AM
Moore (lower body) is practicing Tuesday, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Moore came up gimpy after a big play in Saturday's 29-14 win over Carolina, finishing with three catches for 61 yards over the course of two drives. The Bills scored a TD one snap after Moore's injury and then pulled most of their starters, so he didn't really have a chance to rejoin the game. A quick return to practice confirms that it's a minor injury and that he's already feeling better.
Returns to Buffalo
Mon, Aug 17, 2026, 8:24 PM
Reese and the Bills agreed on a contract Monday.
Analysis: Reese will return to Buffalo after being released by the team Friday. The linebacker appeared in 20 regular-season games between 2023 and 2024 with the Titans, registering 38 total tackles (20 solo) and an interception over those games. Reese didn't play in a regular-season game last year, and he's likely competing for a practice squad spot with the Bills in 2026.
Dalton Kincaid
Dalton Kincaid Logs nine snaps in preseason win
Sun, Aug 16, 2026, 9:11 AM
Kincaid played nine snaps on offense but didn't show up in the box score otherwise during the Bills' 29-14 preseason win over the Panthers on Saturday.
Analysis: Kincaid and Dawson Knox (10 snaps) saw limited action Saturday's exhibition contest, with Keleki Latu leading the tight end group with 31 snaps on offense. Kincaid was limited to 12 regular-season games in 2025 while playing through a torn PCL that he originally sustained in November of 2024. The 2023 first-rounder entered training camp with a clean bill of health and should see more involvement in the passing attack as a reliable set of hands/target for QB Josh Allen.
Keon Coleman
Keon Coleman Banged up after scoring TD
Sat, Aug 15, 2026, 9:49 PM
Coleman appeared to suffer a lower body injury during Saturday's 29-14 preseason win over the Panthers, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Coleman got the start alongside DJ Moore (ankle) and Khalil Shakir, with all three receivers making major contributions. Coleman scored a touchdown to cap off Buffalo's second drive, but he continued playing on the third series with mostly backups until an injury sent him limping off. Coach Joe Brady said both Moore and Coleman should be fine, but Brady did acknowledge that the wide receivers will require further evaluation from the medical team, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports.
Ray Davis
Ray Davis Seven touches in preseason opener
Sat, Aug 15, 2026, 7:09 PM
Davis carried the ball three times for 21 yards and caught all four of his targets for 32 yards in Saturday's 29-14 preseason win over the Panthers.
Analysis: James Cook got the start in the backfield during the Bills' preseason opener and played the whole first quarter, but Davis was the next RB into the game and had a very productive day. Davis' numbers as a pass-catcher were surprising considering that the third-year back has just 27 career catches in 34 regular-season contests, but new offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael has suggested that Cook could see more usage as a receiver in 2026, and Davis might benefit from that wrinkle in the scheme as well when he's on the field.
James Cook III
James Cook III Quick start to preseason
Sat, Aug 15, 2026, 7:03 PM
Cook carried the ball five times for 21 yards in Saturday's 29-14 preseason win over the Panthers.
Analysis: The reigning NFL rushing champ played the entire first quarter in the Bills' preseason opener, and Cook's longest gain was a 13-yard scamper that helped set up a Keon Coleman touchdown. Josh Allen remains the focal point of the offense, but Cook proved last season that he can rack up elite production as well, and the fifth-year RB could see more receiving work in 2026 as new offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael adds some wrinkles to Joe Brady's scheme.
Khalil Shakir
Khalil Shakir Two grabs in preseason opener
Sat, Aug 15, 2026, 6:57 PM
Shakir caught both his targets for 41 yards in Saturday's 29-14 preseason win over the Panthers.
Analysis: The fifth-year wideout caught the first pass attempt of the preseason from Josh Allen, connecting on a 21-yard gain that helped set up a field goal in the first quarter. Shakir started alongside DJ Moore (lower body), and both were productive while Buffalo's first-stringers were in the game. The offseason addition of Moore gives the team a true No. 1 wide receiver, but his presence on the outside shouldn't have a big impact on Shakir's volume in the slot. Shakir has topped 70 catches in back-to-back campaigns, averaging 74 receptions on 97.5 targets for 770 yards and four TDs while missing three total regular-season contests in those two years.
Josh Allen
Josh Allen Finds end zone in preseason opener
Sat, Aug 15, 2026, 6:48 PM
Allen completed six of eight passes for 111 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 29-14 preseason win over the Panthers.
Analysis: Getting the start in the Bills' preseason opener, Allen played the entire first quarter and led his team on two scoring drives, the second of which ended in a nine-yard TD strike to Keon Coleman. Allen didn't run the ball, but the 30-year-old quarterback is saving his legs for the regular season after scoring at least 12 rushing TDs each of the last three years and topping 500 rushing yards each of the last five.
Skyler Bell
Skyler Bell Working through lower-body injury
Sat, Aug 15, 2026, 3:56 PM
Bell did not play in the Bills' 29-14 preseason win over the Panthers on Saturday due to a lower-body injury, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Head coach Joe Brady relayed to reporters after Saturday's contest that Bell could have played if it was a regular-season game. Bell is expected to be back at practice in the coming week, which puts the rookie fourth-rounder on track to play in the Bills' next exhibition game, which takes place Saturday, Aug. 22 against the Browns. The UConn product is competing against the likes of Keon Coleman, Joshua Palmer and Mecole Hardman for rotational snaps on offense behind DJ Moore (lower body) and Khalil Shakir.
DJ Moore
DJ Moore Not worried about injury
Sat, Aug 15, 2026, 3:51 PM
Moore noted after Saturday's 29-14 preseason win over the Panthers that he was "good to go" after an apparent lower-body injury that he sustained in the first quarter, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Moore finished Saturday's exhibition game with three catches on four targets for 61 yards, all of which came during the first two offensive drives. He appeared to pick up the injury on his final catch for 18 yards, but Brady relayed to reporters that the veteran wide receiver would have come out of the game anyways following that drive. Moore wasted no time in showing a rapport with Josh Allen, but the former's injury will be worth monitoring over the coming days, and it wouldn't be surprising if Moore doesn't play in the Bills' next preseason game, which takes place Saturday, Aug. 22, against the Browns.
DJ Moore
DJ Moore Limps off with possible ankle injury
Sat, Aug 15, 2026, 12:33 PM
Moore came off the field grabbing his ankle during Saturday's preseason game against the Panthers, Matt Parrino of The Syracuse Post-Standard reports.
Analysis: Moore got off to a fast start with three catches for 61 yards on the first two drives, but he was favoring his leg/ankle after the last of those receptions. He came off the field and talked with trainers for a moment before walking to the bench and putting his helmet on the rack. The trainers and a team doctor then briefly met with Moore again on the bench before the wideout got up and started walking around on the sideline.
Suspended three games
Fri, Aug 14, 2026, 8:48 PM
The NFL suspended Mathis for the first three games of the 2026 regular season for violating the league's Substances of Abuse Policy, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Mathis is eligible to play in each of the Bills' three preseason games, with his suspension starting Aug. 30. The 2022 second-rounder will be eligible to make his 2026 regular-season debut in Week 4 against the Patriots on Sunday, Oct. 4. Rookie fifth-rounder Zane Durant should see a bump in rotational snaps at defensive end behind starters Ed Oliver and T.J. Sanders while Mathis is serving his suspension.
On roster bubble
Fri, Aug 14, 2026, 8:39 PM
Lundt is on the edge of making the Bills' 53-man roster, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Lundt ended the 2025 season with just eight total snaps for the Bills. The 2025 sixth-rounder is battling with Jude Bowry, Travis Clayton, Nick Broeker and Austin Corbett for a chance at the 53-man roster. With the Bills keeping nine offensive linemen on the initial 2025 roster, two of the four players will likely not make the 2026 cut.
Ty Johnson
Ty Johnson Absent again Thursday
Thu, Aug 13, 2026, 5:32 PM
Johnson (knee) did not participate in Thursday's practice, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Johnson exited Saturday's practice early with a knee injury and has not returned to the field since. Thursday marks the running back's fourth consecutive missed practice, and there does not appear to be a return date in sight. If Johnson's knee injury is severe, the Bills could be waiting for cutdown day to place him on injured reserve with a designation to return during the regular season.
Josh Allen
Josh Allen In line to play Saturday
Thu, Aug 13, 2026, 10:09 AM
Head coach Joe Brady said Thursday that Allen and the rest of Buffalo's healthy starters will play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Panthers, Maddy Glab of the Bills' official site reports.
Analysis: Brady added that he wants Allen to be competitive but mindful Saturday, per Glab. Allen is expected to start Saturday's preseason game but probably won't play more than a few series before giving way to backups Kyle Allen and Shane Buechele.
