Chase Claypool
Chase Claypool Links up with Buffalo
Fri, May 3, 2024, 9:51 AM
Claypool is signing a one-year contract with the Bills, Jonathan Jones of CBSSports.com reports.
Analysis: Unable to make an impact in Chicago or Miami last season, Claypool now heads to his fourth NFL team for his fifth year in the league. It's about as good of a locale as he could've hoped for, as the Bills have a strong-armed franchise QB and questionable depth at WR. Claypool could perhaps serve as a deep threat off the bench even if his days as a starter are numbered.
Curtis Samuel
Curtis Samuel Get competition via draft
Mon, Apr 29, 2024, 6:12 PM
Samuel has a new teammate in the receiving room after the Bills took Keon Coleman out of Florida State with the first pick of the second round Friday.
Analysis: Samuel, signed as a free agent in March, was never going to be a No. 1 or even a No. 2 in Buffalo, but now we at least know who's been brought in ahead of him on the depth chart. It's a mild surprise the Bills chose only one receiver with their 10 draft picks, so for now the versatile Samuel likely sits No. 3 in the pecking order behind Khalil Shakir and Coleman. That said, this is a perfect offense for Samuel's skill set, and he'll be a weapon of some sort once things get going, just not the primary receiving option.
James Cook
James Cook Backfield depth added by Buffalo
Mon, Apr 29, 2024, 2:27 PM
Cook is slated to be joined by rookie fourth-rounder Ray Davis in the Bills backfield this coming season, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Cook is coming off a 2023 regular season in which he carried 237times for 1,122 yards and two TDs to go along with 44 catches for 445 yards and four more scores in 17 games. With veteran backs Latavius Murray and Damien Harris no longer in the mix, Davis should have an opportunity to step into a complementary role behind Cook, while potentially claiming a share of the team's short-yardage work. Also in the team's backfield mix are Ty Johnson, Darrynton Evans and reported UDFA signing Frank Gore Jr., though none is likely to prevent Cook from maintaining steady enough volume in his third pro season.
Quintez Cephus
Quintez Cephus Signs with Buffalo
Sun, Apr 28, 2024, 11:32 AM
Cephus reached an agreement with the Bills on Sunday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Cephus is attempting to revive his NFL career after he was suspended all of last season for violating the league's gambling policy. The 26-year-old wide receiver played in 13 games with Detroit during his 2020 rookie campaign, totaling 20 receptions for 349 yards and two touchdowns, but he participated in just nine contests in the subsequent two years, compiling 17 catches for 219 yards and two scores. Cephus will have a chance to compete for a roster spot among a Buffalo wide-receiver corps that will look much different from last season with the offseason departures of Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis.
Khalil Shakir
Khalil Shakir Standing continues to improve
Wed, Apr 3, 2024, 11:06 AM
Shakir faces a clearer path to targets in 2024 after the Bills traded Stefon Diggs to the Texans on Wednesday, just a few weeks after Gabe Davis signed as a free agent with the Jaguars.
Analysis: One would think Bills general manager Brandon Beane has a second move up his sleeve following Wednesday's blockbuster deal, plus Buffalo will almost certainly select one or two wide receivers toward the top of their draft. For the time being, though, Shakir and newcomer Curtis Samuel are the team's top two receivers. Shakir, who is heading into his third NFL season, is coming off a 2023 campaign in which he produced a 39-611-2 receiving line over 17 regular-season games. His fantasy prospects continue to trend upward, especially with Josh Allen's strong arm delivering him the ball.
Curtis Samuel
Curtis Samuel Inks three-year deal with Buffalo
Thu, Mar 14, 2024, 5:04 PM
The Bills and Samuel agreed to a three-year, $24 million contract Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Over the last two seasons in Washington, Samuel combined for 126 catches (on 183 targets), 1,269 yards and eight touchdowns in 33 regular-season games. He also boasts an average of 5.9 yards on 121 carries across seven years as a pro. With Buffalo, Samuel will bring a versatile aspect to a passing game headlined by QB Josh Allen, WRs Stefon Diggs and Khalil Shakir and TE Dalton Kincaid.
Ty Johnson
Ty Johnson Sticking with Buffalo
Thu, Mar 14, 2024, 8:36 AM
Johnson is re-signing with Buffalo on a one-year contract, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The 2019 sixth-round pick played in 18 games for the Lions and 44 for the Jets before landing in Buffalo last year. Johnson then spent the first month and a half of the 2023 season on the practice squad, eventually getting a promotion after Damien Harris suffered a season-ending head/neck injury in mid-October. By the end of the year, Johnson had eclipsed Latavius Murray as the team's No. 2 RB, getting 15 carries and three targets for 80 total yards in two playoff games. He'll now stick in Buffalo, where James Cook and Darrynton Evans are the only other RBs under contract at the start of the 2024 league year.
Mack Hollins
Mack Hollins Joining Buffalo
Wed, Mar 13, 2024, 9:54 AM
Hollins agreed to a contract with the Bills on Wednesday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Hollins enjoyed a mini-breakout for the Raiders in 2022 with 690 receiving yards -- more than tripling his previous season high -- but then dropped to 251 yards in 13 games with the Falcons in 2023. Though he's valued for his blocking and special teams contributions as much as his receiving ability, Hollins could take some of the snaps and targets that previously went to Gabe Davis, who is leaving Buffalo to sign with Jacksonville. In any case, it's almost a certainty the Bills will be targeting a wide receiver with an early pick in April's draft.
Dawson Knox
Dawson Knox Agrees to restructure contract
Mon, Mar 11, 2024, 9:24 AM
Knox and the Bills have agreed to a restructured contract that lowers his scheduled $14.4 million cap hit for 2024, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The tight end is entering the second season of a four-year, $52 million extension that guarantees most of his money through 2024 but none thereafter. It's possible this agreement changes that, but if not, Knox's future with the team could come into question next offseason. His fantasy value has taken a big hit since the Bills drafted fellow tight end Dalton Kincaid in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Quintin Morris
Quintin Morris Back with Buffalo
Fri, Mar 8, 2024, 3:09 PM
The Bills re-signed Morris on a one-year deal Friday.
Analysis: The 25-year-old tight end will remain in Buffalo after spending the first two years of his career with the Bills. Morris has appeared in 19 games over the past two seasons, logging 10 catches for 210 yards and two touchdowns while also contributing on special teams. The Bowling Green product likely isn't guaranteed a roster spot, but he's expected to compete for another depth/special teams role throughout the offseason.
Kyle Allen
Kyle Allen Bad development for positioning
Thu, Mar 7, 2024, 5:06 PM
The Bills signed veteran quarterback Mitch Trubisky to a two-year deal on Wednesday, presumably to serve as Josh Allen's top backup.
Analysis: Kyle Allen played the backup role for Josh Allen in 2023, but with the latter mostly healthy that yielded only spot mop-up duties, as the former never even attempted a pass. Kyle Allen likely won't be doing that for the Bills in 2024 following the Trubisky signing, as Trubisky comes with a better resume and has a first-round label from 2017. Plus, Trubisky is better suited to serve as at least a partial replica of Josh Allen, as both have strong arms, can be tough to tackle and have running ability. There may no longer be room for Kyle Allen on the roster.
Mitchell Trubisky
Mitch Trubisky Returns to Buffalo as backup
Wed, Mar 6, 2024, 6:46 PM
The Bills signed Trubisky on Wednesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The Steelers released Trubisky last month after a failed two-year run with the team where the 29-year-old went 2-5 as a starter and was benched multiple times in favor of Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph. Trubisky spent the 2021 season as Josh Allen's backup with the Bills and will head back to a familiar spot, where he'll replace Kyle Allen as Buffalo's QB2.
Deonte Harty
Deonte Harty Slated for exit
Wed, Mar 6, 2024, 3:36 PM
Harty was released by the Bills on Wednesday.
Analysis: Harty appeared in 16 regular-season games for Buffalo last season, making 15 catches for 150 yards and a touchdown on 21 targets. He also operated as a return man for the team last season. His exit will save the team $4.3 million in cap space.
Nyheim Hines
Nyheim Hines Likely to be cut
Sun, Mar 3, 2024, 1:36 PM
The Bills plan to release Hines (knee) during the upcoming week, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Though Hines is expected to attain full medical clearance ahead of training camp while he nears the finish line in his recovery from the ACL reconstruction surgery he required last August, he'll have to find work elsewhere while Buffalo looks to utilize his 90-man offseason roster spot on another player. After being acquired from the Colts in November 2022 in exchange for running back Zack Moss and a 2023 fifth-round draft pick, Hines appeared in just seven games for Buffalo, carrying 18 times for 36 yards and a touchdown to go with 25 catches for 188 yards while also contributing as a punt returner. If teams are satisfied with where Hines stands in his ongoing recovery from knee surgery, he could have an opportunity to battle for a third-down role out of the backfield at his next stop.
Trent Sherfield
Trent Sherfield Modest role for Buffalo
Tue, Feb 6, 2024, 10:08 PM
Sherfield caught 11 of 22 targets for 86 yards and one touchdown while playing in all 17 regular-season games.
Analysis: Sherfield had one big primetime moment in the division-clinching win over the Dolphins in Week 18, which just so happened to come against his previous team. Other than that, there wasn't much opportunity that came Sherfield's way since the Bills had several superior weapons across wide receiver, tight end and running back, and Sherfield never moved higher than the fourth spot on the WR depth chart. He was under a one-year deal, but with fellow receiver Gabe Davis a good bet to move to another team, the Bills may try to bring Sherfield back on a similar contract.
Stefon Diggs
Stefon Diggs Unsure of what future holds
Tue, Feb 6, 2024, 1:47 PM
Diggs said Friday that he isn't sure if he'll be back with the Bills in 2024 but told Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network that, "I don't have any surprises for you right now."
Analysis: There was a lot of speculation last spring about Diggs' relationship with the Bills, and more specifically with QB Josh Allen. The wideout said he "gets tired" of the questions about him and Allen, noting that he's already addressed the situation (or lack thereof) multiple times. Diggs has four years remaining on the extension he signed in April of 2022, but there's nonetheless been trade speculation in recent weeks, as the deal doesn't have any guaranteed money remaining and his production dropped considerably in the second half of the 2023 season. On the other hand, Buffalo doesn't have much else at wide receiver -- especially with Gabe Davis scheduled for free agency -- and the first half of 2023 featured one of Diggs' most productive stretches with the team, including five 100-yard games within the first six weeks and seven TDs through nine weeks. He had just one more TD and no 100-yard games thereafter, with his catch rate nosediving to 58.7 percent over the final eight games of the regular season even though he saw less volume (7.9 targets per game) and the Bills won six of those contests. Diggs then finished the season on even more of a low note, dropping a deep ball midway through the fourth quarter of a 27-24 playoff loss to Kansas City. It sounds like the 30-year-old is open to all possibilities for his NFL future at this point.
Latavius Murray
Latavius Murray Tails off at season's end
Sun, Feb 4, 2024, 12:59 PM
Murray finished the season with 79 carries for 300 yards and two touchdowns plus 17 catches (on 22 targets) for 119 yards in 16 regular-season games.
Analysis: Murray saw some run as the No. 2 back for a good stretch of the season, and it led to some nice results, with him peaking on a 6-68-1 line in Week 12. After the team's bye in Week 13, however, Murray saw only nine carries the entire remainder of the season. While he suited up in the playoffs, he didn't see a single carry. Ty Johnson clearly passed Murray in the pecking order for the stretch run. Murray turned 34 last month, and while he still ran with some power and proved to be a nice veteran asset for the Bills as an complement to James Cook, he probably doesn't have much more football left in his fine career.
Josh Allen
Josh Allen Shoulder in better place
Sat, Jan 27, 2024, 2:49 PM
Allen clarified during his season-ending press conference this week that his right shoulder got better as the campaign moved along and that at the moment, he's not planning to have any type of surgery, Maddy Glab of the Bills' official site reports.
Analysis: Said Allen: "It just felt like it kept getting better as the season went on. And especially these last probably four weeks, felt like it didn't bother me at all. So yeah, I don't think there's anything." The team's brass affirmed later in the week that there are no plans for surgery for their star quarterback. This is nice news for anyone holding Allen in a keeper league, as he'll be able to hit the 2024 season healthy after putting up an extremely fantasy-friendly 40-plus touchdowns (passing plus rushing) for an NFL-record fourth straight season.
Shane Buechele
Shane Buechele Staying in Buffalo
Tue, Jan 23, 2024, 5:38 PM
The Bills signed Buechele to a reserve/future contract Tuesday.
Analysis: Buechele will stay in Buffalo after spending the entirety of the season on their practice squad. The 26-year-old will likely spend the summer competing for a backup role behind Josh Allen.
Damien Harris
Damien Harris On track for full recovery soon
Tue, Jan 23, 2024, 12:31 PM
Harris (head/neck) should be healthy before free agency begins this offseason, Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: The 2019 third-round pick signed a one-year contract with the Bills in March 2023 after spending his first four seasons with the division-rival Patriots. Harris then had a small role off the bench for the first six weeks of the season, before a scary head/neck injury sent him to injured reserve for the remainder of the year. He'll turn 27 in February, a month before he's scheduled to hit free agency again.
