James Cook
James Cook Wants extension, more playing time
Fri, Feb 21, 2025, 1:03 PM
Cook is seeking a contract extension and said he'd like to get more playing time as well, Ryan Talbot of newyorkupstate.com reports.
Analysis: Cook scored 18 touchdowns during the 2024 regular season despite playing just 48 percent of snaps in his 16 appearances. He got a carry or target on 50.5 percent of his snaps, which helped make up for the modest playing time and allowed for a second straight 1,000-yard rushing season. He's perhaps the most obvious TD regression candidate in the league for 2025, but he can make up for any losses in per-touch productivity if the Bills give him a larger workload. That's far from guaranteed, of course, considering Cook is one of the league's smaller lead backs (listed at 190 pounds) and has 2024 fourth-round pick Ray Davis behind him on the depth chart. Ty Johnson also got a lot of playing time in 2024, mostly in clear passing situations, but he's scheduled for unrestricted free agency, whereas Cook has one year remaining on his rookie contract.
Quintin Morris
Quintin Morris Nabs five catches in 2024
Fri, Feb 14, 2025, 10:44 PM
Morris finished the 2024 regular season with five catches on eight targets for 36 yards and a touchdown over 16 games.
Analysis: For the third straight season to begin his career, Morris saw more work on special teams than on offense, though he did log over one-third of Buffalo's offensive snaps in four of the team's final eight regular-season contests. His role diminished again in the playoffs, however, as Morris recorded just 12 offensive snaps without any targets over three games. Morris is now slated to be a restricted free agent, and if he's back with the Bills, he'll likely continue to have a minor role on offense given that both Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox are in line to head the team's tight end corps again in 2025.
Josh Allen
Josh Allen Awarded Most Valuable Player
Thu, Feb 6, 2025, 9:47 PM
Allen was named the 2024 NFL Most Valuable Player on Thursday, Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: Allen narrowly edged out Lamar Jackson to win his first MVP award after an impressive 2024 campaign. The quarterback completed 64 percent of his passes for 3,731 yards and 28 touchdowns while throwing six interceptions over 17 regular-season games. Allen also added 531 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns throughout the year. He became the third player all-time to win MVP after not making first-team All-Pro and the first Bills player to win the award since Thurman Thomas in 1991.
Shane Buechele
Shane Buechele Inks future deal with Buffalo
Wed, Jan 29, 2025, 4:56 PM
The Bills signed Buechele (neck) to a reserve/future contract Wednesday, Alec White of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Buechele spent the entire 2024 season on injured reserve due to a neck injury that he suffered during the preseason in mid-August. By signing a futures deal, Buechele will be eligible to participate in OTAs, minicamp and training camp in the hopes of making the Bills' 53-man roster for the 2025 campaign.
Zach Davidson
Zach Davidson Staying in Buffalo
Wed, Jan 29, 2025, 4:54 PM
The Bills signed Davidson to a reserve/future contract Wednesday, Alec White of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Davidson spent the entire 2024 campaign on the Bills' practice squad after failing to make the 53-man roster at the end of training camp. He was elevated for three regular-season games, playing both offense and special teams and logging one catch (on two targets) for five yards. Davidson will be on Buffalo's 90-man roster when the new league year starts March 12, which will allow him to participate in OTAs, minicamp and training camp.
Jalen Virgil
Jalen Virgil Inks future deal with Buffalo
Tue, Jan 28, 2025, 5:24 PM
The Bills signed Virgil to a reserve/future contract Tuesday.
Analysis: Virgil caught on with the Bills' practice squad in late August after failing to make the Broncos' 53-man roster at the end of training camp. He was signed to Buffalo's active roster Nov. 8, and after being waived Dec. 14 he was signed back to the practice squad. He ended up playing in seven regular-season games and spent most of his time on special teams, though he did not show up in the box score otherwise. The 26-year-old wide receiver out of Appalachian State will be on the Bills' 90-man roster when the new league year starts March 12, which will allow him to participate in OTAs, minicamp and training camp ahead of the 2025 campagin.
Tyrell Shavers
Tyrell Shavers Remaining in Buffalo
Tue, Jan 28, 2025, 4:40 PM
The Bills signed Shavers to a reserve/future contract Tuesday.
Analysis: Shavers made a solid impression during Buffalo's training camp, but ultimately fell short of making the 53-man roster. He spent the entire 2024 campaign on the practice squad and was elevated for three regular-season games, with his lone catch going for a 69-yard touchdown against the Jets in Week 17. Shavers will be on the Bills' 90-man roster at the start of the new league year and will have the opportunity to participate in OTAs, minicamp and training camp ahead of the 2025 campaign.
Dawson Knox
Dawson Knox Secures only target in AFCCG loss
Mon, Jan 27, 2025, 4:09 PM
Knox hauled in his only target for seven yards during Sunday's 32-29 loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
Analysis: Knox played 62 percent of offensive snaps during Buffalo's season-ending playoff loss to Kansas City, compared to 46 percent of offensive snaps for second-year pro Dalton Kincaid (two catches for 13 yards on four targets). Across 16 regular-season appearances, Knox racked up 22 catches for 311 yards and one touchdown (33 targets). The veteran tight end has two more years remaining on his deal with the Bills, though the team has a potential 'out' after the 2025 season.
Frank Gore
Frank Gore Staying in Buffalo
Mon, Jan 27, 2025, 3:35 PM
The Bills signed Gore to a reserve/future contract Monday.
Analysis: The undrafted rookie from Southern Mississippi spent his 2024 campaign with the Bills' practice squad after failing to make the active roster in late August. Gore was elevated to the active roster for Buffalo's Week 6 win over the Jets but did not play a single snap. He's now expected to compete for a reserve role in the Bills' backfield this summer, aiming to make his regular-season NFL debut in 2025.
KJ Hamler
KJ Hamler Remains in Buffalo
Mon, Jan 27, 2025, 3:29 PM
The Bills signed Hamler to a reserve/future contract Monday.
Analysis: Hamler, a 2020 second-round pick from Penn State, failed to make the Bills' active roster in late August but remained in Buffalo with the practice squad. His most recent in-game NFL action came with the Broncos in 2022, catching seven of his 14 targets for 165 yards across seven appearances. With Hamler sticking around in Buffalo, he's expected to compete for a depth role in the team's wide-receiver corps throughout the offseason.
Curtis Samuel
Curtis Samuel Scores in AFCCG loss to Kansas City
Mon, Jan 27, 2025, 2:56 PM
Samuel secured one of three targets for four yards and one touchdown in Sunday's 32-29 loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
Analysis: Samuel emerged as a notable contributor for Buffalo's offense during the playoffs, securing six of eight targets for 81 yards and two scores in three postseason appearances, an encouraging development after his underwhelming regular season. Across 14 regular-season appearances, Samuel compiled 31 catches (on 46 targets) for just 253 yards and one touchdown, in addition to five carries for 14 yards. The 28-year-old has two more years remaining on his contract with the Bills, though the team will have a potential 'out' to consider after the 2025 campaign.
Ty Johnson
Ty Johnson Free agency looms after AFCCG loss
Mon, Jan 27, 2025, 1:28 PM
Johnson had five carries for 19 yards and secured his only target for a gain of zero yards during 32-29 loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
Analysis: Johnson worked behind backfield leader James Cook, and above rookie fourth-round pick Ray Davis, during Buffalo's narrow season-ending loss to Kansas City. While suiting up for all 17 regular-season games, Johnson compiled 41 carries for 213 yards (5.1 YPC) and one touchdown, while also hauling in 18 of 25 targets for 284 yards and another three scores. He compiled 130 kick return yards, as well. Johnson is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
Ray Davis
Ray Davis Takes backseat in loss to Chiefs
Mon, Jan 27, 2025, 12:39 PM
Davis carried the ball twice for four yards during Sunday's 32-29 loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
Analysis: Davis was less involved out of the backfield than both James Cook (13-85-2) and Ty Johnson (6-19-0), concluding the playoffs with just seven carries for 36 yards and one score across three postseason appearances. In the regular season, the rookie fourth-round pick suited up for all 17 games, rushing 113 times for 442 yards (3.9 YPC) with two touchdowns. He also had 17 catches for 189 yards and another three scores on 19 targets. Johnson is now set to hit free agency, while Cook is entering the final year of his rookie deal, so Davis could have a chance to carve out an expanded backfield role Year 2.
Keon Coleman
Keon Coleman Only one catch in AFCCG loss
Mon, Jan 27, 2025, 12:23 PM
Coleman secured one of four targets for 12 yards during Sunday's 32-29 loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
Analysis: Coleman struggled to convert on his opportunities throughout Buffalo's playout run, compiling just three catches for 22 yards on eight targets across his three postseason appearances. The rookie second-round pick compiled a 29-556-4 receiving line on 57 targets in 13 regular-season appearances, modest production totals, if somewhat disappointing compared to expectations, considering Coleman's draft capital and the opportunity he faced following the departures of Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis. Coleman's role could grow Year 2, as both Amari Cooper and Mack Hollins are slated to hit free agency, but it also wouldn't be surprising to see Buffalo work to bolster Josh Allen's receiving corps for the 2025 campaign.
Dalton Kincaid
Dalton Kincaid Prolific drop in AFCCG
Mon, Jan 27, 2025, 11:58 AM
Kincaid secured two of four targets for 13 yards during Sunday's 32-29 loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
Analysis: Kincaid's quiet AFCCG performance will be most notably remembered for his drop with just under two minutes left in the fourth quarter, a fourth-and-five play in which Josh Allen found the second-year tight end open downfield, but saw the ball lodge free of his pass-catcher's hands while attempting a diving grab. The admittedly difficult catch highlights disappointment surrounding Kincaid's production Year 2, in which he strung together just a 44-448-2 receiving line across 13 regular-season appearances. Teammate Dawson Knox said Monday that Kincaid played through injuries in both knees, including a torn PCL, per Katherine Fitzgerald of The Buffalo News, but he didn't carry an official injury designation into any of the Bills' three playoff appearances.
Mack Hollins
Mack Hollins Strong AFCCG outing not enough
Sun, Jan 26, 2025, 9:40 PM
Hollins caught three of four targets for 73 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 32-29 loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
Analysis: Hollins was Buffalo's leading receiver in the season-ending loss. He caught a 34-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of the first half and set up Curtis Samuel's game-tying touchdown catch in the fourth quarter with a 32-yard reception down to the 4-yard line. Hollins surprisingly led the Bills with five touchdown catches in the regular season while playing on a one-year, $2.6 million contract, so Buffalo could have some interest in bringing the 31-year-old wide receiver back in free agency.
Amari Cooper
Amari Cooper Free agent following AFCCG loss
Sun, Jan 26, 2025, 9:39 PM
Cooper caught all four of his targets for 33 yards in Sunday's 32-29 loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
Analysis: Cooper wasn't the difference-maker the Bills had hoped for after they gave up a third-round draft pick to acquire him from the Browns. The 30-year-old wide receiver proceeded to catch 20 of 32 targets for 297 yards and two touchdowns in eight regular-season games for Buffalo and added only six catches for 41 yards on eight targets across three playoff outings. Cooper's best days appear to be behind him, but with seven 1,000-yard receiving seasons under his belt, the unrestricted free agent is likely to draw some interest on the open market.
Khalil Shakir
Khalil Shakir Another six catches in AFCCG loss
Sun, Jan 26, 2025, 9:39 PM
Shakir caught six of seven targets for 46 yards in Sunday's 32-29 loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
Analysis: Shakir had six catches in each of Buffalo's three playoff games after leading the team in targets (100), catches (76) and receiving yards (821) during the regular season. The sure-handed receiver can reliably move the chains and do damage after the catch, but Shakir hasn't been much of a red-zone threat so far, with just seven touchdowns through 46 regular-season NFL games. The 2022 fifth-round draft pick will be back in Buffalo for the final year of his rookie deal in 2025.
James Cook
James Cook Finishes season with 19 rushing TDs
Sun, Jan 26, 2025, 9:14 PM
Cook rushed 13 times for 85 yards and two touchdowns while catching all three of his targets for 49 yards in Sunday's 32-29 loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
Analysis: Cook gave the Bills a 10-7 lead with a six-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter and put Buffalo back in front, 22-21, by stretching the ball out for a one-yard touchdown on fourth down just before his knee went down in the third quarter. That turned out to be Buffalo's last lead of the season, as the Chiefs advanced to a third consecutive Super Bowl thanks to an 11-7 scoring edge in the fourth quarter while the Josh Allen-led Bills fell to 0-4 against Kansas City in the playoffs. Cook scored 19 rushing touchdowns in 19 games between the regular season and playoffs, so the second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft projects to be one of the most coveted running backs in fantasy football in 2025, which will be the final year of Cook's rookie contract.
Josh Allen
Josh Allen Two TDs not enough in AFCCG loss
Sun, Jan 26, 2025, 9:13 PM
Allen completed 22 of 34 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns while rushing 11 times for 39 yards in Sunday's 32-29 loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
Analysis: Allen threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Mack Hollins to cut Buffalo's deficit to 21-16 in the final minute of the first half, but the 237-pound quarterback was subsequently stuffed on a two-point conversion attempt. Allen missed another two-point conversion attempt after James Cook's one-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter and came up short on a fourth-and-1 rushing attempt in the fourth quarter but bounced back on the next drive with a four-yard touchdown pass to Curtis Samuel on fourth down to tie the game, 29-29. Buffalo got the ball back down 32-29 with 3:33 to play but promptly turned it over on downs after four Allen pass attempts on the Bills' final possession netted only five yards. Allen had another impressive regular season, compiling 28 passing touchdowns and 12 more with his legs, but he dropped to 0-4 against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the postseason, and this latest loss can be traced directly to Allen's inability to convert short-yardage opportunities with his legs after he had excelled in that department all season. The 28-year-old quarterback has four years left on his six-year, $258 million contract with the Bills.
